This immersive hiking journey through Japan centers on the legendary Kumano Kodo, and Nakasendo trails one of the world’s most sacred pilgrimage routes. This trip is ideal for hikers seeking meaningful miles, cultural depth, and a more intentional way to explore Japan. You will walk through ancient cedar forests, mountain passes, and coastal trails that have guided pilgrims for more than a thousand years. Highlights include hiking to Kumano Hongu Taisha, hiking the dramatic Ogumotori stone steps to Nachi Shrine, and experiencing “forest bathing” along serene woodland paths and brilliant rice patties. Evenings offer opportunities to relax in traditional inns and restorative onsens.
The journey weaves in Japan’s rich cultural heritage. Walking the Nakasendo route, you will visit historic towns, shrines, and tranquil gardens. A special cultural highlight includes a visit and lunch at a traditional miso brewery in Matsumoto, offering insight into centuries-old culinary practices. In Tokyo, we may experience a traditional tea ceremony providing an authentic and elegant introduction to Japanese ritual and hospitality. This thoughtfully paced adventure blends hiking, culture, and reflection, creating a meaningful and unforgettable way to experience Japan.
